Cancer is relentess. But so are we.

It's OK not to be OK!

I have learnt that your path in life is never a straight line. It has twists and turns. It's travels back and forth. It carries you through the good times and the bad, the sorrows and the joys, and people come and go.. free will can change the course of the path, as can your experiences, but most importantly stays on the course that is yours.

I never saw cancer being part of my journey. However, over the years it has made its presence known. It took my dad at 47, too young and too soon. My mum survived it not long after. In 2024 it intersected my life again when I was diagnosed just after turning 50. I was lucky it was caught early, and after a couple of operations, I was told I was cancer free. So, cancer has become part of the journey, a game changer in some respects, but it doesn't define who I am!

Cancer as a disease is its own horror, but the word doesn't explain the extent it impacts your life. Being told is just the beginning.. then comes the surgery, waiting for results, the follow up doctors' appointments, the treatment, etc.. it feels endless while you're in the cycle and I would suggest a significant bump in the road! Then if you are incredibly lucky, you get those all-important words.. WE GOT IT ALL and/or YOUR CANCER FREE!!! Only to realise it's still not the end..

The physical, mental and emotional impact continues long after those words. Your life and for many, the lives of those closest to us have been left it turmoil. It will take more time to get over and heal.. to understand how our path has changed, and how to live with these changes.

While on this roller-coaster, I have learnt that being gentle and kind to yourself is essential. A positive mental attitude also helps. It not only helps you, but those around you to stay focused. For all of those who's path parallels or intersects our journey, we need to let them in. We matter and it is their way of coping as the path they are on changes too.. regardless of the final outcome.

Sometimes we get too focused on the length of the path, and blinkered as to what we believe is important. We forget to slow down and appreciate the breadth of the path too. Break free of those self-imposed constraints. We only get one life.. Cherish it! Enjoy it! But most of all.. Live it!

You may laugh, but my final thoughts are of Ferdinand the Bull.. If you don't know to what I refer, read the book or watch the movie ☺️
