Raising funds to support life-changing cancer research and services
Emily’s story ❤️
People told me “things go downhill in your 30s”, thinking bad backs, bad knees, getting older, never did I think cancer!
Back in February this year, I pushed for blood tests for PCOS after not having a period for nearly six months. Despite some health professionals saying this was “normal” after coming off contraception — it isn’t. And I knew something wasn’t right.
Soon after, I began experiencing intense, persistent bloating. My stomach looked oddly shaped and felt rock hard. I went for a scan — and that’s when my world changed. They couldn’t find my ovary.
The bloating was caused by a tumour.
A month later, I had surgery to remove an 18cm tumour, my ovary, and two 5cm cysts from my remaining ovary (which, thankfully, is now healthy). At the time, I still didn’t think it could be cancer.
I went back to work, trying to return to normal. Then in May, I was told the tumour was a germ cell tumour, and I needed to start preventative chemotherapy — in just five days.
I completed 9 weeks of intense chemotherapy on July 2nd. It took everything from me. But I’m incredibly grateful this type of cancer is highly treatable and curable. I’ve also met some amazing women along the way!
I’m sharing this to raise awareness and help other women spot the signs. Germ cell tumours are extremely rare — found in only about 1 in 500,000 women. Yet time and time again, women’s health concerns are dismissed. Please: if something feels wrong, push for answers.
I had further surgery in September to remove some benign tumours, turns out my body likes to make these 🙃 but that went well and I’m now on surveillance! This means regular blood tests and scans for the rest of my life, but I’m so grateful this is an option!
I’m endlessly grateful to the NHS, my incredible surgeon at Frimley Health, and the amazing oncology team and surgeon at Imperial College.
Most of all, I couldn’t have done this without my amazing; husband, family, and friends. ♥️
